Digiarty Software Air Playit App for streaming audio and video files to mobile devices

I’ve been playing with a free app called Air Playit (by Digiarty Software). The app uses WiFi and 3G/4G networks to streams video and audio files from a Windows or Mac computer to Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch mobile devices (Google Android app coming soon). It supports a variety of audio and video formats and you don’t need to convert a file before playing it on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod. Air Playit acts like a personal video audio cloud so you can listen to music or watch videos without having to download or sync the files to your mobile device. Bottom line: it’s a nice app for playing audio and video files on your idevice without having to store the files on your gadget. However, you also need to have your computer on in order to stream the files.

What I like about the Air Playit app

  • It’s free and not ad supported
  • You don’t have to download all your files to play them on your mobile device
  • Supports local WiFi, remote WiFi, 3G, 4G networks
  • Video converter software isn’t required to watch videos on your gadget
  • You can use the app’s built-in video converter to watch videos offline
  • Automatically caches a song the first time it is played on your device — you can play the cached song later even if you don’t have network connectivity
  • You can adjust video/audio quality and resolution for each file individually
  • You can set default video/audio quality, resolution and FPS for different network connections (local WiFi, remote WiFi, 3G, 4G)
  • Can stream 1080P/1080i HD videos
  • Supports iPhone, iPad, and iPod devices
  • Supports both Microsoft Windows (XP, 2000, Vista, Windows 7) and Mac OS (Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion)
  • Supports 320 different video and audio formats (I didn’t even know there were 320 formats)
  • With its built-in HTTP server, you can access audio and video files stored on your computer with a web browser
  • If you have Apple TV, you can use Air Playit to stream video and music to TV
  • Supports automated server discovery on local network by Bonjour Service

What I don’t like about the Air Playit app

  • Too many pauses when streaming videos in real-time
  • Doesn’t seem to support playlists — you have to manually select another song after each song is done
  • You need to install a server client on your computer
  • Your computer needs to be on for streaming
  • Doesn’t currently support Android (coming soon, but no idea when)
  • It takes a long time to convert a video for offline viewing
  • Takes a long time to download the converted video to your mobile device via local WiFi
