Review: OnPage Smartphone Pager App for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Blackberry, and Android Devices

Onset Technology OnPage smartphone paging app

I recently downloaded the OnPage app (Onset Technology). The mobile app essentially turns your smartphone into a pager. It’s pretty neat and is a very handy tool for dads and moms. I tested the app on my Apple iPod Touch and it works great. However, the iPod Touch isn’t an ideal device because you need to be able to connect to the Internet 24×7. Otherwise, you won’t receive the alerts when someone is trying to contact you. The Onset Technology app works better with iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, and Android devices.

Review: Mobile Banking Apps – I love e-deposits

e-deposit with Bank of America - Mobile Banking app

I finally got around to installing a couple of mobile banking apps on my Apple iPod Touch. Mobile banking apps have been around for a while, but I never found a need to install them because I prefer to do online banking on my desktop computer. Until now. That’s when my credit union announced they were offering e-deposit via a smartphone. Cool. I hate making a special trip to the bank just to deposit a check or two.

Review: Whiz Racer Android App – it’s a fun math game for kids

Enigma Games Whiz Racer video game

Enigma Games sent me an evaluation version of their new Whiz Racer game for review on my geek dad blog. The racing video game isn’t really a racing game at all. It’s actually an educational game in a race car setting. It could just as easily been an archery game because the main objective of Whiz Racer is solving math problems. The setting just makes the the app more interesting for kids. Whiz Racer is currently available for Android devices for $2.99. Versions for iOS, PC and Mac platforms will be coming soon.

App Review: Rocka Bowling 3D – it’s fun and free

Rocka Bowling 3D app ~ Best Cool Fun Games

I’ve been playing with an app called Rocka Bowling 3D. It’s a fun app by Best Cool Fun Games [Facebook | Twitter]. As you can tell by the name of the app, it’s a bowling game. The app reminds me a little of the bowling game in Wii Sports. But instead of using a Wii controller, you swipe with your finger to roll the bowling ball. Rocka Bowling 3D is available now in the Apple AppStore. It’s compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (requires iOS 4.1 or later). Note: there is also a Google Android version, which was actually developed first.

Air Playit App for streaming audio and video files to mobile devices

Digiarty Software Air Playit App for streaming audio and video files to mobile devices

I’ve been playing with a free app called Air Playit (by Digiarty Software). The app uses WiFi and 3G/4G networks to streams video and audio files from a Windows or Mac computer to Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch mobile devices (Google Android app coming soon). It supports a variety of audio and video formats and you don’t need to convert a file before playing it on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod. Air Playit acts like a personal video audio cloud so you can listen to music or watch videos without having to download or sync the files to your mobile device. Bottom line: it’s a nice app for playing audio and video files on your idevice without having to store the files on your gadget. However, you also need to have your computer on in order to stream the files.

Remote Car Starter is Cool, but Engine Starter App is Cooler

By now, most of you probably have seen the Volkswagen Passat Star Wars commercial that ran during the Super Bowl. The ad featured a kid in a Darth Vader costume trying to use the Force around the house when he finally succeeds with the 2012 Volkswagen Passat. I thought the ad was funny, but I also like the Lightning Edition version uploaded by panzerNEWB (I embedded the video below, but at some point YouTube might remove the unauthorized version). The remote engine starter is a cool feature for a car, but I don’t think it’s as impressive as the OnStar MyLink Mobile App. It’s an iPhone and Android smartphone app for remotely starting your vehicle. Plus it can also lock/unlock the car doors from any distance and activate the car horn and lights.

Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid with LePad Slate – Notebook/Tablet Combo

At CES 2011 (yeah, I wish I was there), Lenovo showed off their IdeaPad U1 hybrid with LePad slate. The Lenovo product is both a laptop and a detachable tablet. Pretty cool. Even more awesome is that it runs both Windows 7 and Android 2.2. When the slate is docked (IdeaPad U1 mode), the system runs Windows 7. When the tablet is detached (LePad slate mode), the system runs Android 2.2. I don’t have one to play with, but it’s suppose to switch operating systems seamlessly and magically.
