NXP wireless light switch - front view

Here’s a cool gadget – a wireless light switch that doesn’t need electricity. The switch uses energy harvesting technology to transmit the wireless signal to the light bulb when you press the mechanical switch. The light bulb still needs power, and of course it has to one of those cool wireless light bulbs.

The new switch is from NXP Semiconductors. It uses NFC technology, so the switch has to be within range of the wireless light bulb. The switch isn’t available yet, but NXP have sent out samples to manufacturers. No pricing information has been released, but the price will most likely be significantly higher than the typical light switches out in the market today. On the other hand, the wireless switch will save you the expense of hiring an electrician to run wires from the switch to the light source.
